Preparing Your Cub Cadet Walk-Behind Mower for Storage

Winters in Newfoundland are tough, and it’s important that your Cub Cadet lawn mower is prepared so it’s ready to tackle more mowing next spring. Without proper preparation, you risk malfunctions, safety hazards, and unnecessary stress on your mower. Follow the tips in this guide to protect and prepare your mower this fall before the frost sets in.

1. Prepare the Mower Safely

  • Place the mower on a flat, level surface.

  • Turn off the engine and let it cool completely.

  • Disconnect the spark plug ignition wire for safety.

2. Replace the Spark Plug

  • Inspect the spark plug and replace if worn or damaged.

  • Use the operator’s manual or the existing plug to find the correct replacement.

3. Change the Oil

  • Use a siphon pump to remove old oil via the dipstick hole.

  • Add fresh oil as specified in your operator’s manual.

  • Use the dipstick to confirm the correct level.

4. Replace the Air Filter

  • Remove the filter cover and both paper and foam elements.

  • Lightly oil the new foam element, squeeze out excess, and reinstall both elements before securing the cover.

5. Clean the Undercarriage and Inspect the Blade

  • Tilt the mower (air filter side up) and clear away grass, debris, and buildup.

  • Using gloves, inspect the blade for damage; sharpen or replace using proper tools and torque specs.

6. Check for Worn or Broken Parts

  • Inspect items like belt covers, belts, chute, bag, mulch plug, tires, cables, etc.

  • Replace any components that are worn or damaged.

7. Add Fuel Stabilizer

  • Pour fuel stabilizer into the fuel tank to prevent gumming and degradation during storage.

8. Choose a Proper Storage Location

  • Store the mower in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area.

  • Avoid corrosive materials (like fertilizers) and ignition sources such as pilot lights or furnaces.
